Black Friday fervour wanes as some consumers, retailers shun practice

Black Friday for Nerds The Geekiest Black Friday Sale is Live

Black Friday has evolved from an in-store only event to one of the biggest online shopping events.

Last year, Thanksgiving weekend sales in stores in the US were down 4.2 per cent, while foot traffic fell 4.4 per cent, according to data from RetailNext, a retail analytics firm.

BLACK Friday is well and truly underway, with prices of products, both online and in store, being slashed until Cyber Monday - but what's the difference between them? Retailers try to attract shoppers with deep discounts.

Black Friday has been a hit in America and has also seen crowds rushing to shops in the United Kingdom in recent years.

Two factors seemed to have altered how people view Black Friday, said JoAndrea Hoegg, an associate professor at the University of British Columbia's Sauder School of Business.

Based on Adobe Analytics data,$2.87 billion was spent online Thursday, an 18.3% jump over last Thanksgiving. "It's sort of less of a hype that this is the one day of the year - this and Boxing Day - that you can really, you know, get that fantastic deal". That's up almost 18 per cent from the same timeframe previous year. Shoppers placed 48% more orders on smartphones on Thanksgiving this year over last, surpassing computers for the first time ever, according to Salesforce.

The entire Black Friday weekend could ring up close to $20 billion in sales across all channels, Adobe projected.

The Amazon Black Friday Live show adds some infotainment to your Black Friday deal hunting on Amazon.

So in what amounts to a preview of my game of the year post that will go up some time next month, I've collected the best deals on the year's best games from a variety of retailers and digital storefronts.

"While many feel that Black Friday is mainly an online phenomenon we have had a very busy day, with shoppers making the most of the special deals on offer from our brands throughout the centre".
