Irani takes on Congress over 'chaiwalla' meme

Youth Congress mocks PM Modi with'chaiwala meme draws flak

The Indian Youth Congress" online magazine "Yuvadesh' tweeted a picture that took a crass jibe at the PM for his bad English.

The Congress has hurled itself into a new controversy over mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "chai-wala".

Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had, in January 2014, said "Modi would never become prime minister, but he was welcome to serve tea to Congressmen".

Two months later, the BJP won the election by a landslide majority and the Congress' fortunes have been eroding steadily ever since.

In the meme, PM Modi asks Trump and May if they have seen his memes put out by the opposition.

Where PM Modi says: "Aap logon ne dekha vipaksh mere kaise kaise maimai banvata hai?". However, he is shown as mispronouncing the word "meme" as "me-me", instead of "meem" which is the correct pronunciation. The PM is then corrected by Trump and Teresa May is shown advising Modi that he was better off "selling tea".

"INC strongly disapproves & rejects such humour through memes. Differences on policy and opinion aside, Congress culture imbibes respect for PM and all political opponents".

Union Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in a series of tweet, question Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi and said that though the meme was pulled out it exposed Congress thinking towards the poor. "Despite huge political differences with BJP and having suffered abuse from their leaders, we respect the PM and all the political opponents". "No lessons learnt. Insulting popular mandate".

Youth Congress in-charge Suraj Hegde also took the "volunteer" line of explanation and said, "We condemn this and are apologetic".

However, the tweet was deleted a few hours after it was posted as Congress went into damage control.
