President Trump suggested on Tuesday that voters in Alabama should support the embattled Republican Senate candidate, Roy Moore, as the alternative on the ballot is a Democrat. "We'll have to let you know next week", he told reporters. "Jones, I've looked at his record", Trump said.
Trump also criticized Moore's Democratic rival, Doug Jones, in the special election December 12 to fill the seat held by Jeff Sessions before he became Trump's attorney general. "And by the way, he totally denies it". But more important, if he campaigns for Moore he will expose himself to constant questions about his own ethical standards with respect to sexual harassment and assault, and his own views on old men preying on young women.
Trump also said he will announce next week whether he will campaign for Moore, who has been abandoned by the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Republican National Committee in the wake of the accusations.
Several women have said Moore tried to start romantic relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.
"He says it didn't happen", Trump added, "and you have to listen to him also".
Trump, McConnell and the NRSC backed Moore's primary opponent, appointed Sen.
A reporter asked Trump if an "accused child molester" was better than a Democrat. "A lot of things are coming out and I think that's good for our society and I think it's very, very good for women". And I think it's very, very good for women. "Anything they can do, any lie they can make up, any person they can drag up and put in front of a TV camera to say negative things against Judge Moore is coming".
But the White House signaled on Monday that its position was shifting away from the mainstream of Republican leaders, as White House counselor Kellyanne Conway signaled the need for Moore's vote on tax reform was more important in the administration's calculation than the sexual misconduct allegations leveled against him.
