British rider Hegarty killed in Macau Motorcycle GP crash

Daniel Hegarty Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix Glenn Irwin Honda

Macau has been hosting the street race for cars and motorbikes since 1954.

Northern Ireland's Glenn Irwin was announced the victor after the race was stopped, although there were no anthems or champagne on the podium.

The race organizer stopped the race by raising red-flags and sent Daniel Hegarty to hospital immediately by an ambulance.

"The Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee extends its deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Daniel", the organisers said in a statement.

After this sad news, the sporting aspects of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix pale into insignificance.

However, a statement issued by the race organizer confirmed that he died en route to the hospital.

Mr Hegarty's fatal accident was the first at Macau since Luis Carreira from Portugal was killed in qualifying in 2012.

Speaking afterwards, the victor said it "was not a celebration".

"The win is all irrelevant now and I wouldn't have won the race had it gone the distance".

Irwin had opened a visible lead over Hickman by lap four, but the English rider slashed the deficit on lap five as the race began to build into a straight shootout between the fellow British Superbike men. That's road racing and it's tough.

Fellow Ulster rider, Lee Johnston finished the race in the top eight.
