Tesla Unveils 2 Mind-Blowing New Vehicles -- What You Need to Know

Elon Musk and Amber Heard

Tusk says the new version of the Roadster will be, "the fastest production auto ever made, period". On the one hand, the Tesla Semi is shaping up to be the hot-rod of trucks, with a 0-60 miles per hour time of 20 seconds even when at maximum 80,000 pound load.

Inside the Tesla semi's cab, the driver is seated in the center - rather than on the left or right - with a large touch screen on each side.

Of course, the Model 3 loomed over it all.

Tesla shares are up 51.46% this year.

Tesla says if there is a crash and the auto doesn't hear from you, it will automatically call emergency responders. But it was easy to forget about all the snags and delays plaguing the production of Tesla's first mass-market electric vehicle, especially with Musk dropping phrases like "zero to 60 in 1.9 seconds" and "620-mile range".

Investors appear ready to ride shotgun on Tesla's journey into the trucking business. Fleet operators want reliable trucks, and Tesla will have to prove it can make them, said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst with the vehicle shopping site Autotrader.

The Tesla Semi Truck has a range of 500 miles, can go from 0-60mph in under 5 seconds and claims to be more aerodynamic that a supercar.

Semi adds one more major project on the plate of Musk, who not only has several in the works at Tesla, but also runs aerospace company Space X, and The Boring Company, which is attempting to solve traffic woes by creating a high-speed transportation system featuring a series of tunnels.

Tesla sold just 222 Model 3s from July through September.

Musk said Autopilot will come standard on its electric trucks. Drive-train redundancy should also guard against jackknifing and boost the Semi's reliability.

Musk said the specifications of the Roadster 2.0 demonstrate the capabilities of battery-powered cars compared with their gas-guzzling counterparts.

Musk said Tesla will guarantee the big rigs will not break down for a million miles because they have will have multiple motors.

He noted that engine maker Cummins, German auto giant Daimler and commercial truck company Navistar are all working on their own electric trucks.

Automotive News quoted Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book, as saying that "Elon's showmanship remains intact".

This is also the first sign that Tesla's Semi announcement isn't just a flashy stage show: A pilot partner eager to talk about actually using the trucks immediately shows there's some some fire behind the smoke. "So far that final element has eluded Tesla Motors, which makes it hard to see these vehicles as more than "what if" concept cars".

Tesla's ultimate goal is to usher in sustainable transportation.

But truck drivers may still have some reservations.
