Nintendo nearing deal with Minions studio to make Super Mario movie

A New Mario Movie Could Happen As Nintendo Reportedly Nears Deal With Despicable Me Studio

"Mario and Luigi are heading to the big screen in one of the highest-profile licensing deals by a Hollywood studio in years", the Journal reported. Furthermore, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto will most likely serve as a producer. According to The Wall Street Journal, though, the Mario Bros. will be getting a second chance at cinema life with a deal between Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination Entertainment. The animated movie would be released by Universal, which handles finances and the release of Illumination films and has a previous relationship with Nintendo that includes creating Nintendo-themed lands at Universal Studios. The report also reveals that, after negotiating for almost a year, the parties are close to reaching a deal with Nintendo. The Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo led adventure comedy has maintained such a sour reputation that it's looked like no one would ever dare to attempt a Mario movie again. Secondly, Universal has a more than proved record in making successful animated films, which makes them a flawless fit to propel the brand into Hollywood stardom. Universal Parks entered an agreement with Nintendo to develop multiple attractions based on the cavalcade of iconic characters the video game publisher owns.

Illumination, which is behind the Despicable Me franchise and subsequent spin-offs, declined to comment. The film is still in the early stages of planning and wouldn't be exiting any warp pipes for several years, and would be animated at Illumination's Paris-based studio Mac Guff.
