Electronic Arts have bought Titanfall developers Respawn Entertainment

They then went on to create Respawn Entertainment together, and the series Titanfall: published by Electronic Arts (EA), it took numerous design choices of a modern Call of Duty game, and added some flair in the form of giant robots.

In addition to the afore-mentioned $151 million in cash up front, EA has agreed to pay "up to $164 million in long-term equity in the form of restricted stock units to employees, which will vest over four years", as well as more cash (up to a maximum of $140 million) based on "achievement of certain performance milestones, relating to the development of future titles" through 2022. But it appears to have bounced back from its slow start, and EA's announcement confirms that Respawn is working on "a new title in the Titanfall universe".

"Our longtime partnership is grounded in a shared desire to push the boundaries and deliver extraordinary and innovative new experiences for players around the world". The video game developer - created by former Infinity Ward executives and Call of Duty creators Jason West and Vince Zampella - burst onto the scene in 2014 with their Xbox exclusive shooter game, Titanfall. With Titanfall and Star Wars, EA has been a great development partner that supports us and doesn't interfere with our process for making games or studio culture.

The acquisition gives EA all control over Respawn's output, with last year's Titanfall 2 struggling to meet its sales targets after it appeared to compete directly with the release of Battlefield 1 - a mistake we doubt will be repeated. "While it wasn't necessary, going with EA made a lot of sense", he wrote. Zampella also lauded EA for letting Respawn do its thing without interference, and allowing the studio to grow its own culture.

The deal may very well change the original EA-Respawn dynamic, which kicked off in 2010 as part of the "EA Partners" program.

The fact that EA acquired Respawn isn't concerning in and of itself; what is concerning is the timing of the acquisition. Respawn is also developing the third Titanfall and a virtual reality game for Oculus.
