GOP leaders bolt from Senate candidate Moore after sex claim

Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore is counter-punching hard.

Three other women interviewed by the Washington Post said Moore, now 70, approached them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s.

This, even as Moore's would-be Republican colleagues have called on him to quit the race if the allegations were true.

The NRSC and RNC did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment Friday.

"When I asked what does he believe the motivation is with these women coming forward, making the accusations they have, again, Jerry Moore says it's money and the Democratic Party, implying that they are doing this because they're being paid in some way, and it is for the goal of derailing or interrupting this campaign", Savidge said. Luther Strange. The likes of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell endorsed Strange and warned that nominating the already-controversial Moore would create a host of problems for the party if and when he came to Washington. "Bringing Joseph and Mary into a modern-day molestation accusation, where a 32-year-old prosecutor is accused of molesting a 14-year-old girl, is simultaneously ridiculous and blasphemous", Ed Stetzer, a pastor and church consultant who holds the Billy Graham Chair of Church, Mission and Evangelism at Wheaton College in IL, told The Washington Post.

Now party leaders expect new questions about the Moore accusations.

"There's nothing to see here", said Jim Zeigler, the state auditor and a longtime supporter of Moore.

What is it about using Jesus to defend Moore from this allegation? Skipper said that he would still support the candidate and that he figured most of the Alabama Republicans he knew would probably do the same. Alabama voters who routinely cast votes for Republicans would presumably take a second look at the ballot, remember that the GOP has withdrawn its endorsement of Moore, and write in unusual instead. John McCain said the allegations are bad enough, and Moore should step down anyway.

"The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying", said Arizona Sen. If after reading the Washington Post's account with 30 sources and significant details you wouldn't trust a candidate to babysit your adolescent, you shouldn't vote to put him in office either.

The allegations are so serious, he continued, and the fact that they have been corroborated by a number of women points to Moore needing to shoulder the burden of proving himself to be innocent, King added. He has denied the allegations in a written statement, and in an email to his supporters, he said he meant to stay in the Senate race to fight the "forces of evil".

Ivey said she would vote for Moore, who is up against Democrat Doug Jones in a December 12 special election, but has a policy of not offering endorsements.

Democrats familiar with the campaign being run by their nominee, Doug Jones, said no new ad buys or investments were planned to take advantage of the story. To listen to some Republican officials in the state, Moore is a victim even if he is guilty.

Doster, the adviser to Moore, said the candidate's campaign chairman, Bill Armistead, had talked to members of Alabama's congressional delegation after the news broke. He was twice removed from his Supreme Court position, once for disobeying a federal court order to remove a 5,200 pound granite Ten Commandments monument from the lobby of the state judicial building, and later for urging state probate judges to defy the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized gay marriage.
