Sacked Zimbabwe VP vows to fight back

In happier times perhaps. Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe sits with his wife Grace and Emmerson Mnangagwa

The war veterans' leader said this from South Africa at a press conference with global media on Wednesday.

The ruling ZANU-PF "is not personal property of you and your wife to do as you please", Mnangagwa said in an angry five-page statement, vowing he would return to Zimbabwe to lead party members.

President Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF party has expelled former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, three days after he was sacked by the Zimbabwean leader for alleged disloyalty, deceitfulness and other issues.

The war veterans' statement used language similar to that used by Mr Mugabe's guerrillas during their fight against white minority-ruled Rhodesia in the 1970s.

Emmerson Mnangagwa said he had to leave Zimbabwe because of "incessant threats" to him and his family by people who allegedly have tried to kill him in the past.

In recent years he has emerged as Mr Mugabe's heir apparent and the leader of one of two powerful factions vying for influence within the ruling Zanu PF party.

Zimbabwe's president says he fired his longtime ally for scheming to take power, including by consulting witch doctors.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, that was the time when he reportedly "unsuccessfully attempted to wrestle power from President Mugabe soon after the country's democratic elections".

Mnangagwa's removal on Monday was a boost for Mugabe's wife, Grace, who has been a vocal critic of the former vice president and is seen as a potential successor to her husband.

Now, Mr Mugabe's wife Grace appears poised for the role.

"We have kicked him out for the same reasons", the president said.
