Disney faces film critics boycott blacklisting the LA Times

I won't be seeing Star Wars:The Last Jedi- or any Disney film- at preview screenings

"Disney's actions, which include an indefinite ban on any interaction with The Times, are antithetical to the principles of a free press and set a unsafe precedent in a time of already heightened hostility toward journalists", the statement said.

Several other outlets had said they would join in not reviewing Disney films until the dispute is resolved.

"We've had productive discussions with the newly installed leadership at The Los Angeles Times regarding our specific concerns, and, as a result, we've agreed to restore access to advance screenings for their film critics", Disney said in a statement-conveniently not mentioning that its films were facing a widespread boycott from film critics. "This is a unsafe precedent and not at all in the public interest", noted a spokesperson in a statement.

Disney prevented the Times staff from attending screenings of Disney films after the paper wrote critical coverage of Disney's business dealings in Anaheim, California. "We fully support press and intellectual freedoms", TFCA president Peter Howell said in a statement, "and we urge Disney to do the same by lifting its ban of the L.A. Times". The critics groups noted that it was "admittedly extraordinary" to "take any action that might penalize film artists for decisions beyond their control".

Four of the most prominent film critic groups in the country have jointly denounced Walt Disney Studios and banned the studio from year-end awards consideration until it "publicly rescinds" a media blackout on the Los Angeles Times. The key line from that statement bundles the Disney action with signals coming from the White House: "Disney's actions. are antithetical to the principles of a free press and set a unsafe precedent in a time of already heightened hostility toward journalists".

Thus, for as long as Disney locks out the Los Angeles Times, this outlet will withhold the only thing we have of value to that studio: the free advertising provided by not only reviewing their films, but write-ups of their trailers, production announcements, casting rumors, and so on.

The New York Film Critics Circle will vote on its annual awards on November 30.

A company spokesman didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

At this point, it seems that the likeliest outcome is that Disney will blink first and allow the Times back into its press screenings. "We hope they will adhere to balanced reporting in the future". The Washington Post's Alyssa Rosenberg wrote yesterday that she will not be going to advance screenings of Disney films so long as Disney continues to impose this ban. In addition to the just-released Thor: Ragnorok, the entertainment giant also has Star Wars: The Last Jedi still to come, as well as a string of hits released in 2017, including the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Cars 3, and Coco.
