Did Carter Page just confirm some key details from the Steele dossier?

Carter Page

During seven hours of testimony here on the hill, it became clear that senior members of the trump team knew about a 2016 trip that Carter page made to Moscow and that page may have had more interactions with Russian officials than he previously disclosed.

He also said he told Sam Clovis, a former co-chairman and policy adviser to Trump's campaign, about his trip.

Asked about the email, Page told lawmakers he did not mean that he had met with officials, but rather had learned of their views in local media, from scholars in Russian Federation and at a public speech given by Dvorkovich at a conference where Page was also speaking.Page said he had a "brief hello" with Dvorkovich.

Page wrote in a July 2016 email to Trump campaign aides that Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich "expressed strong support for Mr. Trump and a desire to work together toward devising better solutions in response to a vast range of current worldwide problems", according to a transcript of more than six hours of testimony Page gave last week before a House of Representatives committee investigating Russian interference in the USA election.

Page's July 2016 trip to Moscow drew attention during the campaign, particularly after WikiLeaks released emails that had been hacked from the Democratic National Committee a few weeks later and Russian Federation became a controversial campaign topic. Page also testified that he was aware of Papadopoulos' meeting with a professor with links to the Kremlin, even as he had been invited to Moscow by another professor with connections to the Russian government.

Another adviser, George Papadopoulos, pleaded guilty in October to lying to federal agents about Russian contacts during the campaign.

Page is one of a number of Trump associates whose contacts with Russians before the election are emerging as important factors in investigations by Congress and Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Lewandowski, Page said, approved of the trip, as long as he was going by himself and not affiliated with the campaign.

"I hadn't watched Russian TV for many years, but watching Russian TV in my few days in Moscow there", Page said.

Now the attorney general, Sessions has testified in front of the Senate that he was not "aware" of any Trump surrogates who had communications with the Russians.

In one email to fellow campaign aides, Page suggested that Trump perhaps take his place and travel to Moscow "to raise the temperature a little bit" and, in another, he asked how campaign officials would "prefer me to focus" his remarks.

That didn't stop him from traveling to Russian Federation again in December 2016.

Steele alleged that Sechin offered Page the brokerage of a 19 percent stake in Rosneft in exchange for getting US sanctions lifted against oligarchs close to Russian president Vladmir Putin.

The most common theme in Page's testimony was a relentless pivoting towards the dossier compiled by Steele, which he says has led to death threats.

Page said that he remembered the diplomat's name as Reka, likely referring to former ambassador Réka Szemerkényi, who left her post in 2015.

Former Trump adviser Carter Page's testimony to Congress evolved into a sprawling exchange with lawmakers that now stretches for more than 200 pages, but in between convoluted answers it provided critical insights in the Russian Federation investigation. He said he did not recall any discussion of hacked emails there.

Papadopoulos also told his superiors on the campaign that he was being offered "dirt" on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton and "off the record" meetings with Russian leaders - which, according to court documents, he was encouraged to pursue.

The two men had a brief interaction at the commencement ceremony, where Dvorkovich also spoke, Page said.
