Former Nigeria Star, Emenalo Quits Chelsea As Technical Director

Michael Emenalo

The failure of the latter pair at Chelsea is seen by Emenalo as the responsibility of Jose Mourinho.

Former Nigeria worldwide footballer, Michael Emenalo has quit as the technical director of English side Chelsea, stepping down from his post after 10 years with the Blues.

The former Nigerian worldwide, who joined Chelsea in 2007 and has been technical director since 2011, has already been linked with a position at Monaco.

Marina Granovskaia, a director at Chelsea and known key-figure in transfer dealings, is a long-term ally of Roman Abramovich and is someone who looks to have an even greater amount of power than Emenalo when it comes to recruitment.

According to a report on the UK Telegraph, Emenalo made a decision to leave after declining not to engage in a three-way power battle with current Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and Marina Granovskaia who are known not to see eye to eye.

"This has been a very hard decision to make, but one I believe is right for both myself and my family, and the club", Emenalo said. Reportedly, Abramovich was reliant on Emenalo for advice - he was one of the few people that the owner trusted. I wish Chelsea every success and look forward to following the club's future triumphs from afar, ' he added. We are sorry to see him go but understand his desire to move on and explore new challenges'.

The move may be viewed in some quarters as a victory for Conte, but Emenalo has remained supportive of the Italian who he helped to appoint a year ago.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea won three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the League Cup, Europa League and the Champions League in 2012 as well as achieving huge success in youth football.

Chelsea said the club will be reviewing its management structure, with the help of Emenalo.
