Avalanche sends Duchene to Sens in three-way deal

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

As part of the deal, Turris will sign a six-year, $36 million extension with the Predators.

The Avalanche and Senators announced the trades after Duchene was pulled out of Colorados game at the Islanders midway through the first period.

Duchene left the Avs game against the New York Islanders mid way through the first period. He set a career-high with 70 points in 71 games as a 23-year-old during the 2013-14 season, when the Avalanche miraculously won 52 games under then-head coach Patrick Roy.

The Avalanche received the biggest haul, getting back two players apiece from the Senators and Predators as well as three picks. Colorado receives prospects Samuel Girard, Vladislav Kamenev and a 2018 second-round draft pick from Nashville and forward Shane Bowers, goaltender Andrew Hammond, a 2018 first-round pick and 2019 third-round selection from Ottawa.

Senators general manager Pierre Dorion says the trade to bring Matt Duchene to Ottawa was a "no- brainer". "We've said all along that we wanted to be patient and wait for the right deal, and this is the opportunity we feel is best for the organization". Colorado entered Sunday 8-5-0 after finishing with just 48 points last season, the fewest by a non-expansion team since 1998-99. This season, he has 10 points in 13 games.

Duchene's swift exit seemed sudden, but he suspected something might happen, having been the subject of trade rumors for months. It's very unusual, but I kind of half-expected it to be the weirdest way possible.

Girard, 19, was a second-round pick of Nashville in 2016.

Hammond, 29, has spent the 2017-18 season with the Belleville Senators and is 2-2-1-1 in seven games this season with a 2.21 goals-against average and a.925 save percentage. During the 2014-15 season, Hammond helped launch Ottawa into the playoffs by posting a 20-1-2 regular-season record, all of which took place between February 16 and the regular-season finale on April 11.
