Over 7 million Nintendo Switch consoles shipped ahead of Christmas

200 Titles Now Available in Nintendo Switch eShop

At launch, Nintendo managed to sell 2.74 million units in the first four weeks.

The company said Monday it logged a 51.5 billion yen ($456 million) net profit in the fiscal first half-year. Nintendo posted a revenue of 219.9 billion yen ($1.9 billion), compared to the analyst's estimate of 174 billion yen. The company forecast a profit of 120 billion yen for the year ending March, up from the 65 billion yen estimated three months ago. The strong showing has led to Nintendo upping its annual Switch sales forecast from 10 million to 14 million, meaning the company expects its new console to outsell its predecessor by March 2018. It's hardly surprising though given how disappointing the Wii U performed.

Nintendo shares have almost doubled since Switch's launch, although they slipped 0.25 percent yesterday to end at ¥42,870.

Splatoon 2 has sold 3.61 million units since it launched in July while other games such as 1-2 Switch and ARMS have sold 1.37 million and 1.35 million copies respectively.

Whichever way you look at it, Nintendo is having a fantastic year, and with demand so high every one of those 16 million+ Switch consoles will sell. The Wii U also didn't see the kind of software selections that the Switch has been seeing, which includes over 200 games just seven months after its release.

Last week's release of Super Mario Odyssey, which bettered the week one performance of Breath of the Wild in the United Kingdom, should propel those numbers even further.

Nintendo's past struggles in the gaming market had been due to users flocking towards new mobile-based games, rather than consoles.

Nintendo is positioning itself for the year-end holiday shopping season with Switch, while a cheaper yen has also bolstered its bottom line.
