ISIS Shores Up Defenses at Key Border Stronghold

Iraqi rapid response members fire a missile against DAESH militants during a battle with the militants in Mosul Iraq

After overrunning vast territories in Iraq and Syria in mid-2014, Daesh has recently suffered a string of major defeats at the hands of the Iraqi army and a us -led coalition.

The Iraqi air force has dropped thousands of pamphlets urging ISIS members in the border region to surrender.

"Tell those among your children and relatives who took up a weapon against the state to throw it aside immediately, and to go to any house on top of which a white flag have been raised when the liberation forces enter al-Qaim, " said the leaflets dropped by the Iraqi airforce.

According to al-Dulaimi, Iraqi troops and tribal volunteers - backed by US -led coalition air power - are now advancing on Al-Qaim city.

The U.S. -led coalition said it launched 15 strikes on IS targets in the Al-Qaim area and in the town of Albu Kamal on the Syrian side of the border.

In Syria, Islamic State has been driven back into a strip of territory along the Euphrates River by separate offensives waged by the Syrian government and its allies on the one hand, and by Syrian militias backed by the USA -led coalition on the other.

The Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, known as al-Hashad al-Shabi, are also taking part in the offensive against the Islamic State group, according to sources.

In the month of September, CJTF-OIR carried more than 344 open reports of possible civilian casualties from previous months and received 302 new reports resulting from Coalition strikes (artillery or air) in support of partner force operations to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Syrian government forces and their allies have made rapid gains against Islamic State in Deir al-Zor in recent weeks.

Iraqi forces have retaken more than 90 per cent of the territory ISIL seized in the country in 2014, with the terrorists now confined to a stretch of the Euphrates Valley adjoining some of the last areas they still hold in Syria.

Meanwhile, Staff Major General Qassem al-Mohammadi said the army troops were advancing on four fronts to recapture the militant-held areas from the east, southeast, north and south.
