It's all in preparation for the Bloodhound's eventual 1000-mph world-record attempt, which will take place on a dry lake bed in South Africa in 2020.

It was driven on the runway at Cornwall Airport, Newquay, by former RAF fighter pilot Andy Green, who set the previous record of 763mph in 1997. Powered by a Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine, the vehicle pulled 1.5G as it hurtled along the 9,000 ft (2.7 km) runway.

This public test will be the first of many such trial runs as the team put every single part of the auto through its paces ahead of the historic test run in South Africa in 2019.

The engineering behind the Bloodhound SSC is fascinating.

The Bloodhound Super Sonic Car conducted its first public test run today, rocketing 210 miles per hour (340 km/h) down the runway at Newquay Airport in southwest England.

Later in the year, Belstaff will also release two limited edition styles of sunglasses too, designed in collaboration with Andy Green for use in the African desert during the record attempts. Mr Green said: 'I can not think of a better way to do it than that run. "It's also notable for being the longest period that we've run the vehicle for, at around 21.5 minutes - and remember it's created to run for just two minutes at a time in the desert".

Final checks are made before the engines are started on the Bloodhound 1,000mph supersonic racing auto during its first public run at Cornwall Airport, near Newquay. "And then to slow down, I need to apply gentle pressure to the brakes for two seconds to "warm up" the carbon fibre disk brakes before applying full force on the brakes to stop the auto".
