Body found during search for 3-year-old Sherin Mathews

An amber alert for Sherin Mathews 3 has been discontinued who went missing when her father Wesley Mathews 37 placed her outside at 3 AM as a punishment for not drinking milk

During a news conference Sunday afternoon, police said the child's body was found in a culvert.

Mathews disappeared in the early morning of October 7 after her adoptive father Wesley Mathews put her outside their home at 3 a.m. for not drinking her milk.

A police spokesman told the media that investigators have no reason to believe that the body recovered belongs to any other missing child.

The affidavit mentioned that the father was not too anxious and did a load of laundry and waited until after sunrise to report her disappearance to police. Mathews was arrested Saturday on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child. He was placed on electric ankle monitoring and surrendered his passport as a condition of making bond the next day.

The body was found in a tunnel about half a mile from her home on Sunday. They say neither he nor the child's adoptive mother is cooperating with investigators, reports CBS Dallas Fort/Worth.

According to an arrest affidavit, Wesley told Sherin to stand near a large tree in the backyard.

A positive identification of the body has not been made, but police said they believe it's Sherin.

Investigators have asked neighbors and area businesses to check their video surveillance cameras for footage of a maroon Acura SUV owned by the Mathews family that they believe left the home between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. on October 7. They confirmed they discovered a small body in a culvert while searching the area with canines.

The medical examiner is working to determine the cause of death.

Police weren't alerted about Sherin being missing until five hours later.

State Child Protective Services also removed a 4-year-old child from the home. She was ordered by her foster father, Wesley Mathews, to stand outside at around 3:00 am after not finishing a meal, and vanished. She was in the house at the time, but was reportedly asleep and unaware of what her husband was doing, according to police. "Indian Embassy in USA is actively involved and they keep me informed". "We have established the contact with the community and authorities", the Consul General of India in Houston, Anupam Ray had tweeted.
