Trump slams National Football League for not forcing players to stand for USA anthem

Giants John Mara Most fans demand players stand for national anthem

The boss of the NFL, Roger Goodell, said on Wednesday that the players of professional league of american football should be standing up during the national anthem, without turning it into an obligation as required by the president, Donald Trump. "Add your name below to show your patriotism and support", the petition reads before asking for your name, email and zip code.

In a brief press conference on Tuesday night at the NFL's headquarters, Goodell was asked whether players were told to stand during the anthem.

Trump tweeted his disapproval of the decision.

"The NFL has decided that it will not force players to stand for the playing of our National Anthem". The demonstrations began past year with former San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has been unable to find a new team after leaving the 49ers. He's now a free agent, and has filed a grievance against team owners saying they colluded to keep him from being signed.

In a later tweet, Trump suggested action needed to be taken in response to the large number of players who continue to protest during the national anthem. But a post from the president's private Twitter account early Wednesday morning indicated otherwise. The NFL stopped short of meeting Trump's desire that players be forced to stop protesting. Total disrespect for our great country! A joint statement released by the NFL and the NFL Players Association described the meeting in NY as "productive". "It's also important for us to honor our flag and our country, and we think our fans expect us to do that".

Players across the league doubled down by kneeling, locking arms, and sometimes sitting for the anthem after the president called on owners to fire players who did so. Polls have found that a majority of Americans disapprove of the anthem protests but are unhappy with the way Trump has handled the issue.
