Malaysia: At least 20 workers buried in landslide at Penang construction site

He said the bodies of two Indonesians and an unidentified foreigner have been recovered.

Rescuers searching for construction workers buried alive by a landslide in Tanjung Bungah, Penang were forced to suspend their efforts due to nightfall.

Fire and rescue official Mohamad Rizuan Ramli said a 10-meter hill slope crashed down at the construction site in northern Penang state, a popular tourist destination, early Saturday.

The landslide occurred at about 8.30am today.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, the outbreak which ravaged the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah, a "tahfiz" boarding school for boys where students learn to memorise the Koran, was reported around 5.40 a.m. local time (2140 GMT Wednesday).

"We were told there were at least 15 people trapped inside", he added.

Maimunah said the two found dead were Bangladeshi workers.

Outside the construction site relatives of the missing gathered. "There was hardly time to do anything", he was quoted as saying.

"We don't know what caused the landslide yet. It has not been raining for days on the island", she told reporters.

He said the operation had to be halted to ensure the safety of the search and rescue operation personnel.

As soon as the Bangladeshi victims are identified, the High Commission will make an arrangement to send the bodies home and then will try to realise compensation, Sayedul said.
