Celtics' Hayward Has Surgery, Likely Out for Season

The Celtics’ Gordon Hayward is tended to after his serious ankle and leg injury. More

The entire Quicken Loans Arena was filled with a anxious echo when Boston Celtics star Gordon Hayward suffered a gruesome injury that resulted to a dislocated ankle and a fractured tibia in their opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Before Boston's home opener against the Bucks Wednesday, the Celtics played a video of Hayward after introducing him with the starting lineup.

Gordon Hayward's first season with the Boston Celtics is probably over after five minutes of game action. "We know there will be a lot of tough days ahead on that recovery, but at the same time, I think hopefully he'll improve day-to-day".

"Thank you to everyone who's kept me in their thoughts and prayers", the 27-year-old All-Star said to loud cheers from the crowd, before the Celtics hosted the Bucks.

"I'm not going to speculate or put a timeline on it", he told reporters Thursday. I want nothing more than just to be with my teammates and walk out onto that floor tonight.

Of particular note to Celtics fans, Stevens wouldn't declare whether or not Hayward's injury is season-ending. "But I'll be supporting you guys from here, and wishing you the best of luck". The team will be cautious to bring him back too fast, but I think he could by the end of the season.

"We'll see how that works itself out".

Hayward - one of the most underappreciated players in the National Basketball Association over the last several years with the Utah Jazz - signed a four-year, $128 million deal with the Celtics over the offseason, and was viewed as the potential missing piece to help the Celtics get past LeBron James and the Cavs in the Eastern Conference Finals.

In all, the Celtics will be able to recoup approximately $11 million of the $29.7 million the team owes Hayward this season.
