Skies over France to light up with spectacular meteor shower this weekend

Orionid Meteor Shower 2017

Dozens of shooting stars are expected to streak across the sky as Earth passes through debris of Halley's Comet.

FANCY wrapping up warm, settling down under the stars and marvelling at the next meteor shower to grace our skies?

First things first, do you know the difference between a meteor, a comet and an asteroid?

The Orionid meteor shower is not the most prolific of the annual meteor showers (the more-prolific Perseids are more famous for a reason, and the Leonids have provided some of the most stunning shows in history).

We'll still see mostly clear skies tonight along with mild temps and just a few thin clouds. Orionid meteors are visible from anywhere on Earth.

The astronomer explained that before midnight, the meteors will travel from the east or across the sky to the west. Thus, in the case of the Orionids, which are set to peak this weekend, that constellation is Orion. They're called meteorites once they hit the ground. The meteors themselves don't really show up until they have moved roughly 30 degrees from the radiant point. In the southern hemisphere Orion stands on his head, so you will have to look down.

The Orionid meteor shower, which appears once a year in October or November, near the Orion constellation (brush up on your Greek mythology here), is known to generate the Usain Bolt of meteor showers-incredibly fast and bright, producing up to 20 meteors per hour.

With meteor showers you must be prepared to wait, so star gazers are advised to bring something to sit or lie down on.

How can I see the Orionid Meteor Shower?

What is the best place to watch the Orionids meteor shower?

The darker location you visit, the brighter the meteors will appear in the sky. This year's shower should be aided by the lack of harsh moonlight.

While falling Orionids will be visible to the naked eye from nearly anywhere in the country, stargazers are advised to steer clear of cities so as to escape light pollution for the best view of the dazzling display.
