Polestar 1 unveiled | New Release

Volvo has 'special relationship' with Chinese government, says CEO

"Polestar 1 is the first vehicle to carry the Polestar on the bonnet", said Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Volvo's Polestar, as reported by Carscoops.

Volvo in July announced that every vehicle it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor.

The Polestar 1 will arrive in 2019, with numbers to be capped at just 500 units per year due to its finicky carbon fiber-intensive production process.

Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar, said: "Polestar 1 is the first auto to carry the Polestar on the bonnet".

It is true that Polestar's volume models are still to come. Polestar 1 measures 4,500 mm in length and compared to the Volvo S90, the wheelbase is 320 mm less and the rear has been shortened by 200 mm.

Polestar, which together with Volvo is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is constructing a state-of-the-art development and production facility in Chengdu, China (it's where Volvo already has a plant). Now under construction, the facility is due for completion in mid-2018.

Polestar 2 will start production later in 2019 and will be the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) from the Volvo Car Group.

The initial phase of the Polestar product roll out will then be completed by the subsequent arrival of a larger SUV-style BEV, the Polestar 3, which will create a modern expression of electric performance and driving dynamics.

The Polestar 1 will also form part of a new scheme which the manufacturer says will move away from the traditional model of vehicle ownership. Cars will be ordered 100 per cent online and offered on a two or three year subscription basis.

A Polestar subscription won't require a down payment, will include additional services and benefits such as rental access to vehicle accessories and alternative Polestar/Volvo models, and won't necessarily entail a trip to the dealership, with the availability of a purely Web-based sales experience. There will be no Polestar dealers - and no Polestar cars in the corner of a Volvo showroom - but there will be Polestar retail "spaces".

"We believe that subscription is the future", said Jonathan Goodman, Polestar's chief operating officer.
