Google offers stronger security for targeted users

The rollout of a suite of new email security services by Google follows a USA presidential election past year that was shaped in part by the disclosure of emails by anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks belonging to associates of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton that were obtained through phishing schemes.

In addition to this, Advanced Protection limits the apps that are allowed to access your Google Drive or Gmail account (which has been a vector for attacks in the past), and also makes it much more hard to recover your account, preventing hackers from gaining access through social engineering.

Google is rolling out a fancy new security feature today that's created to protect users who face significant risk of having their accounts hacked-election and campaign officials, victims of intimate partner violence, and others seeking additional security. Google has enabled this feature as an additional login mechanism on regular accounts for years, but Advanced Protection accounts are different because this is their only option. But there are a handful of people who are so valuable as targets that hackers will go after them specifically - say, election campaign managers.

As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Google has announced numerous security-related updates including revamped phishing protection.

Hall said the new features would increase the number of high-risk consumers with strong protections against phishing campaigns.

"We're using this knowledge to test new predictive phishing protections in Chrome". For now, these will only be Google apps, but we expect to expand these in the future.

Today, Google rolled out a new program called Advanced Protection for personal Google accounts, meant to provide much higher account security to users of services like Gmail and Drive who are at a high risk of being targeted by phishers, hackers, and others seeking their personal data.

Users will also not be able to use third party applications to check their email like Apple's iOS mail application or Microsoft Outlook, and not have access to their accounts if they forget their passwords, unless they do a lengthy account recovery process. Hall is a chief technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, who was briefed on the new features by Google. So, joining the program means you'll always have the strongest protections Google can provide. Support for the security key protocols required by Advanced Protection isn't yet available in other browsers.

He also brought up the data privacy disconnect that exists between the USA and other parts of the world.
