Facebook acquires anonymous teenage polling app 'tbh'

Facebook has bought a two-month-old app called tbh, which lets people send each other positive feedback through anonymous, quiz-style polls.

The tbh team wrote in an announcement post that "When we met with Facebook, we realised that we shared numerous same core values about connecting people through positive interactions". TBH launched in early August and already has more than five million downloads and over one billion messages sent.

Facebook has been acquiring various players in the mobile app segment in the last few years and the latest member to join the likes of Instagram and WhatsApp is tbh.

A spokeswoman for Facebook said that the social network is not disclosing the terms of the deal, but TBH's millennial co-creators - Nikita Bier, Erik Hazzard, Kyle Zaragoza and Nicolas Ducdodon - will become Facebook employees, based at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., and will continue to work on TBH.

However, one expert commented that Facebook keeps a close eye over new companies and is willing to pay a premium to buy them rather than risk them developing into a threat.

On its acquisition, tbh said, "We were compelled by the ways they could help us realize tbh's vision and bring it to more people". It's the No. 1 free app on the iTunes charts - ahead of YouTube, Snapchat and Instragram. A tbh is used nearly like a form of Instagram currency, since you can trade a TBH for a like on one of your photos.

TBH, which is available only for Apple devices at the moment, will continue to exist as a stand-alone app. On the first day, almost 40 percent of the school downloaded it. Facebook's advertising business model stems from its rule requiring people to use their real identities on its network, making clear what they like and don't like and attaching their internet behavior to their name. Furthermore, it was in three more schools on the next and 300 schools on the next.
