Two top Lashkar-e Toiba terrorists killed in encounter in J&K's Pulwama

A top Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LeT) militant Waseem Shah, along with an accomplice, was killed in a fire-fight with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's southern Pulwama district on Saturday. They have been identified as Wasim Shah and Hafiz Nisar.

Sources said security forces launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Litter village Pulwama, 32 km from here during the wee hours on Saturday following information about the presence of a group of militants in the area. "Well done JKP boys and other SF (security forces)", J-K's Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid tweeted.

The operation started after the security forces received specific intelligence inputs on the presence of the militants in the village. "In the ensuing gunfight, two LeT militants including a top commander were killed", the IGP said.

Shah, a resident of Heff-Shrimal in Shopian, had joined militancy in 2014. His associate Nasir had joined militants only this year.

After the gunfight ended, the locals especially youth took to roads and staged protest demonstration.

Protesters from the village and adjacent areas gathered in large numbers pelting stones at the forces and shouting anti-India slogans. The cops fired tear smoke shells, pellets and live ammunition on the mob causing injuries to five protestors. The injured person is undergoing treatment at SKIMS, Soura.

A police spokesman while confirming killing of civilian said he lost life in cross firing.

He said a police driver identified as Khurshid Ahmad was killed and two other policemen injured in the militant attack. A Bomb Disposal Squad was rushed to the area, who defused the device, police said.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, no arrests were reported.
