Hurricane Ophelia 2017 could bring hurricane conditions to Ireland next week

Three Category 4 hurricanes - Harvey, Irma and Maria - made landfall in USA territories, and that has not ever happened on record!

Hurricane-force winds extend out 25 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend out 70 miles.

With the organization of Tropical Storm Ophelia, there have now been 15 named storms this season. The intensity is somewhat uncertain, however, as there have been no aircraft investigations of the hurricane since it is well away from land over the open Atlantic, forcing forecasters to rely on remote sensing techniques to estimate wind strength.

The storm was upgraded to a category one hurricane last night and is taking an unpredictable path across the Atlantic. Seemingly every thunderstorm complex in the basin turned into a hurricane over the past two months, with many undergoing "rapid intensification" and reaching the top levels of the Saffir-Simpson scale. That has not happened since 1893, according to McNoldy.

Ophelia is forecast to transition to an extratropical storm by Monday - but it could still be at hurricane strength as it moves very close to Ireland and Great Britain on Monday and Tuesday, the hurricane center said. This makes 10 straight hurricanes in the modern era an even more impressive feat.

Tropical storm Ophelia strengthened into a hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean Wednesday to become the 10th hurricane of the season, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Ophelia is forecast to drift northeast through today and to pass just south of the Azores into the weekend.

Its interaction with colder water and the jet stream means Opehlia will likely lose its tropical characteristics before reaching Ireland and the United Kingdom, becoming a post-tropical (also called extra-tropical) storm.

Forecasters said Ophelia will likely bring some impacts to those areas, but it's still too early to say what they will be.
