Another Equifax hacking possible as web page taken down

Was Equifax Hacked Again?

"When it becomes available or we have more information to share, we will".

Already in the midst of the worst year ever for a credit-reporting agency, Equifax said Thursday that it was the victim of another cyberattack, this time involving a fake Flash downloader that greeted some people on its website.

To serve the adware up to visitors, the hackers appear to have redirected them from Equifax's site to shady web pages that host the malicious software. Equifax first disclosed that breach in September.

The latest reports of a hack also come on the heels of the Equifax signing a multi-million dollar deal with the IRS to assist with taxpayer and personal identity verification services.

"We are aware of the situation identified on the equifax.com website in the credit report assistance link", Equifax spokesman Wyatt Jefferies said in an email. But lawmakers and several federal agencies, including the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission, are investigating the company's response to the breach, why it took Equifax more than a month to notify the public and whether executives engaged in insider trading.

Equifax has also said a file containing names and birthdates of 15.2 million people in the United Kingdom were accessed.

"Equifax was a portal and probably not directly hacked or compromised", he said.

The news site Ars Technica, citing an independent security analyst, reported visitors to the Equifax site were being tricked into downloading an "adware" program which, when installed, delivers unwanted marketing messages.

The cyberattack occurred through a vulnerability in an open-source application framework it uses called Apache Struts.

Equifax Inc. (NYSE:EFX) announced that the company was hit with yet another hack.
