Free smoke alarm giveaway kicks off National Fire Prevention Week

Officials offer tips during Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 8 to 14. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reminds us that every second counts in a fire and that can mean the difference between having a life end in tragedy and escaping safely.

Hammer says parents should make sure their youngster know the plan.

"They are cheap and can get you out of the home when your escape route is blocked", he said. "The objective of Fire Prevention Week is to educated the public on the importance of fire safety education".

But for larger homes, like Alisha Springmeyer and Neal Braunel's foster home with nearly a dozen children, fire prevention and safety is not just a week-long event; it's a way of life.

Most importantly, designate a meeting place once you're outside the home.

"Five years ago, we knew we had three or four minutes before the room was all on fire and about two minutes before the hallways were too deadly to escape through", said Fire and Life Safety Specialist, Monica Colby. While ESFI works to raise awareness of the necessary precautions that can help eliminate electrical fire hazards, Siemens technology is at work every day to prevent fires and other catastrophic events in our living and working environments.

She admits she's never been in a fire but says it's important to listen for new information every time this week rolls around.

"Smoke and fire spread fast", he said, "You really have to plan before". They'll have trucks and a fire safety house on hand.

"If you are cooking stay in the kitchen".

It's Fire Prevention Week and fire departments are traveling to nearby schools to teach kids about fire safety. They reassured students that they needn't be afraid of firefighters even when their uniforms make them look unrecognizable.

KCFD gave away free smoke alarms for National Fire Prevention Week. "At first, we sought cities that had experienced a number of fire fatalities, but we've have since tried to reach out to fire departments in every corner of the state".
