Man Utd on edge as Lukaku declared fit for Belgium clash

Marouane Fellaini to be sidelined “for a couple of weeks”

Manchester United manager José Mourinho is believed to be deeply concerned over suggestions that Belgium will field their star striker Romelu Lukaku in this evening's World Cup 2018 qualification match against Cyprus.

While they have nursed one United star back to fitness, Belgium have seen another laid low while away on worldwide duty.

The 24-year-old, who has claimed 11 goals in ten games at Manchester United this season, picked up a knock against Crystal Palace that precluded him from training last week.

The 29-year-old midfielder started Belgium's World Cup qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday but was forced off in the 29th minute of the match with an apparent knee problem. We are in touch with Man United's medical team.

The news comes as a positive for Jose Mourinho's side after Belgium boss Roberto Martinez suggested he could be set for an extended stint on the sidelines.

A statement later released on Belgium's Twitter confirmed his fears and revealed the extent of Fellaini's injury.

"I don't think the state of the pitch played any part and it was just a collision between two strong players who wanted to win the ball, and unfortunately Marouane ended up with damage in his ligament".

Despite having endured an underwhelming first four seasons at United, Fellaini has proven himself to be invaluable to the club with Mourinho favouring height.

There is an uncertainity surrounding Michael Carrick too which means the club will be with only Ander Hererra and Nemanja Matic in midfield.

United boss Jose Mourinho will be hoping Lukaku isn't risked against Cyprus as he hopes to avoid any more injuries to key players ahead of this weekend's big Premier League game against Liverpool at Anfield.

"Paul is very important for Manchester United but we also have great players to play instead of him".
