Las Vegas gunman fired on security guard before mass shooting

Las Vegas Shooting Chicago Marathon

Paddock sprayed an outdoor concert with bursts of gunfire from high above in a Las Vegas hotel window on October 1, killing 58 and wounding hundreds more, before shooting himself.

Campos was shot through the door at 9:59 p.m. - "prior to [Paddock's] shooting to the outside world", Lombardo said. Paddock, who had outfitted a room service cart with security cameras and placed it outside his room, then shot Campos through the door of his suite.

Paddock was said to have been previously seen on several occasions in Las Vegas, without anyone accompanying him and he gambled the night before the shooting, said Lombardo.

It was not immediately clear why the timeline of the shooting changed a week later and what its effect could be on the investigation.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo's confirmation of this adjustment of facts has a big impact on the timeline of events and raises even more questions about the shooter.

Police officers who started searching the hotel after the shooting began didn't know a hotel security guard had been shot "until they met him in the hallway after exiting the elevator", Lombardo said.

"It was a tragedy of unimaginable proportions", Pence said as he addressed almost 300 people at Las Vegas City Hall Saturday afternoon. "We do not know whether he had planned to cause additional harm outside of what occurred at Mandalay Bay".

Police said Paddock managed to fire off over 200 rounds as the security guard approached the suspect's room alone. Marilou Danley, his live-in girlfriend who was out of the country at the time of the shooting, is still speaking with police about Paddock.

"Nobody played as much and as long as I did", he said, and added that he would play the game for "14 hours a day, 365 days a year" on an average in the year 2006.

Originally, police said that Jesus Campos, a security guard at the Mandalay Bay, was shot by Paddock as he was opening fire on the concertgoers. While Paddock claimed during his testimony that he had no history of mental illness, criminal convictions or history of addiction, he was reportedly prescribed Valium "for anxiousness".

"Because this individual purposefully hid his actions leading up to this event, and it is hard for us to find answers for those actions".

A coroner has finished Stephen Paddock's autopsy.

"We believe he made a decision to take the lives he did, and he had a very purposeful plan that he carried out", Lombardo said.

Lombardo also confirmed on Monday that federal investigators returned to search Paddock's home on Sunday in Mesquite, Nevada, as well as other property belonging to the suspect.

The guard who found the shooter and helped bring the massacre to an end said, "I was just doing my job".

Investigators are now working on learning more about Paddock's frame of mind.

"Every piece of information we get is one more piece of the puzzle".
