The hardy San Juan mayor is not one to be silenced, though, and in an interview with Univision on Wednesday she wrote a black T-shirt with the worst "nasty" on the front.

On Tuesday, Trump toured a small slice of Maria's devastation during his visit to Puerto Rico and praised the relief efforts of his administration without mentioning the criticism that the federal response has drawn. "If we don't get the water and the food into people's hands, what we are going to see is something close to a genocide", she said.

"Nasty woman" has become somewhat of a battle cry for women who oppose Trump, 71, ever since he used the term to describe Democratic rival Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential election.

US President Donald Trump tosses rolls of paper towels to people at a hurricane relief distribution centre in San Juan, Puerto Rico. "If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency".

She couldn't be as kind toward Trump, who visited the US territory Tuesday and was criticized for his lack of compassion for victims of Hurricane Maria.

"I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack..."

Among the other signs of progress Friday, according to Puerto Rico's government: 78 percent of gas stations up and running, 73 percent of supermarkets open, and more than half of bank branches open. Because we've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico.

During last year's campaign, Trump suggested the USA government could address its own debt problems by renegotiating its bonds and paying less than their face value, remarks that also raised alarms in the markets.

However, Trump, who unleashed a series of tweets blasting San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz for criticizing the federal government's slow response to the disaster on the island, could not contain himself even while pledging an all-out effort to help the island.

"And that's fine, we've saved a lot of lives".

It's been two weeks since Hurricane Maria raked Puerto Rico, but the island's doctors and nurses remain in nonstop triage in hospitals dealing with power outages, evacuations, dwindling supplies and nearby crime, NBC News reported.

Mr Trump also pointed out the impact on United States spending from storm recovery on the island, which itself was already facing a budget shortfall of $72bn (£54bn).

Air Force One brought the president, first lady Melania Trump and aides to Puerto Rico in late morning.

After lavishing attention and time on Texas and Florida, Trump tweeted his wish for Puerto Ricans to "be careful" just before the storm hit, but then didn't talk publicly about the island's post-hurricane struggles for days as he chose instead to fight with the NFL over some of its players kneeling for the national anthem.

Puerto Rico's bonds, which have been falling since Hurricane Maria struck, took a sharp plunge Wednesday. "They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort".
