Microsoft euthanizes Groove Music, switches to Spotify

Microsoft said Monday it plans to discontinue its Groove Music Pass streaming service and it will instead partner with streaming giant Spotify

Starting December 31, the Groove Music app will lose its features for streaming, purchasing and downloading music.

Admitting that more customers prefer Spotify, Microsoft has chose to discontinue its Groove Music service by the end of the year and expand its partnership with Spotify. Anyone with a subscription to Groove will be able to move their curated playlists and collection from Groove to Spotify.

"By mid-October, an update to the Groove Music app will be available for Windows 10 and Xbox One devices", the announcement reads. Users of Groove Music can move the content to Spotify until at least January 31, 2018.

Microsoft isn't presenting any new music benefit; rather, the organization is exchanging existing Groove clients to Spotify.

Bowden likewise addresses how, without purchaser benefits, the organization anticipates that users will opt for Windows. It seems the company realized that the online streaming service space has just two leading players - Spotify and Apple. Groove Music Pass will close on December 31, 2017. However, Groove Music never really caught up to Spotify or Apple Music, and ultimately competed among a list of second-tier services. When it's live, you'll only need to launch the latest version of the app and click the "Move my music to Spotify" button you see in the pop-up alert. Interestingly, it partnered with competitor Spotify to port former Groove users over to the popular platform.

As part of the Groove Music Pass program, subscribers also received a complimentary allotment of OneDrive storage. That dream is over", while Tom Warren from The Verge's news site posted a tweet that, "Not sure why anyone ever used Groove Music. Spotify also offers music fans a personalized music experience with playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar, so you can always hear your next favorite song. But Microsoft is telling people that they should consider migrating to Spotify, and a transition process will kick in soon.

Music streaming hasn't simply outpaced digital downloads and the purchase of CDs, it's now responsible for supporting America's recorded music industry.
