It is very exciting, and yes, for those of you who are curious, I was the last person who thought I could save jazz. They're not really amusing but they're not awful, they just exist to fill some time. Having people break mid-sketch so often is usually off-putting, but it did help several subpar sketches tonight: Gosling was clearly having so much fun that I felt bad I didn't share his level of enthusiasm. It went really well when I did. And in that moment, Ryan Gosling is all of us.
The rest of the core cast, led by two-time Emmy victor Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson, will be back. Change is the lifeblood of the show, and while it can be sad when favorites go, it's often exciting to see new Not Ready For Primetime Players take the stage. Gosling was thankfully awarded something of a saving grace, facing away from the camera for most of the sketch while McKinnon demonstrated on him the aliens' fascination with her backside; the giveaway, however, was when his full body literally started shaking with laughter. We need another Gosling-Stone movie ASAP! Thanks to Gosling's ample experience with weird moments of high drama (see also Lars and the Real Girl) there's a lot of authenticity in his delivery. That's three hits for new cast members Chris Redd and Heidi Gardner who join Gosling and Strong along with Beck Bennett, Melissa Villasenor, Kyle Mooney and Mikey Day.
Gosling also played a gangster in love with a chicken (Bryant) - he cracked up when they had problems with a prop gun. It wasn't that amusing but Ryan Gosling having the inability to keep a straight face is charming and more than makes up for it.
