Whole Foods Market Reports Breach

Whole Foods Hackers

The hack concerned venues like taprooms and its full table service restaurants which use a different point of sale system than ones found in its stores.

In response to Gizmodo's inquiry on Thursday, Whole Foods declined to say how many of its stores may have been involved or where they were located.

It has been made clear that Amazon was not impacted by the breach as it does not have any direct connections to the affected systems.

The disclosure follows a series of high-profile breaches in which credit card or other customer data were stolen from corporate hands, often via weaknesses in Internet-linked systems.

The company said it contacted law enforcement, launched an internal investigation and sought help from a cybersecurity forensics firm.

If you shop at Whole Foods Market, you may want to check your statements carefully for unusual activity. It's unclear how many restaurants Whole Foods has.

The breach comes after Amazon last month completed its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods.

The supermarket chain said it recently received information about unauthorized access of payment card information in some stores.

Whole Foods Market store in Sacramento, California. It will take additional measures to turn around Whole Foods' two years of steady sales declines, Mr. Goldin said.

According to Whole Foods, the taprooms and restaurants process payments on a separate system from the main checkout lines.

Segmentation has always been highlighted by security experts as being a best practice to help organizations limit the damage they face in the event that they get breached (see 5 Secrets to Security Success).

Amazon could not be immediately reached for comment.
