England boss Gareth Southgate: 'Fabian Delph will provide competition'

Vardy'I am not just back-up for Kane

England boss Gareth Southgate has announced his squad for their final two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Hopefully, Alli could only miss the game with Slovenia at Wembley next Thursday when a win will secure the Three Lions' place for Russian Federation 2018.

But the 21-year-old midfielder has been called up by England manager Gareth Southampton despite his position being unclear.

Delph impressed as Manchester City's makeshift left-back during their win over Shakhtar Dontesk in the Champions League this week, following Benjamin Mendy's injury that will see him sidelined for the next few months.

Delph, who last played for England against Spain in November 2015, takes his place in the 26-man squad alongside fellow returner Fraser Forster.

Sky Sports News had reported Alli would be selected for the squad regardless of whether he suspended by Federation Internationale de Football Association for making an offensive gesture during England's 2-1 win over Slovakia at Wembley last month.

"I have had a good chat with Dele".

"We think he is a player that can provide that and we are looking forward to working with him".

"He's obviously at a club where chances have been limited", Southgate said of Delph, "but he's dug in and forced his way into their side, and is playing well".

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster joined Delph as the only changes to the squad, with Everton's Michael Keane included despite concerns over a foot complaint.

England require just two points from their matches against Slovenia and Lithuania to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in Russian Federation.

Elsewhere in the squad, Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is also included, coming in for Burnley's Tom Heaton who is now sidelined with a shoulder injury.
