One of the top militant Abdul Qayoom Najar was killed in a gunfight near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir's Baramulla district today.

The police recovered arms and ammunition, apart from Pakistan currency notes near Najar's body.

Najar, 39, who had been an active part of terror operations since 1999, was killed near Zorawar Post of Lachiproa in Uri.

Official sources said that a police has sent a communication to the cellular companies to snap both internet and voice service with immediate effect within the jurisdictional area of police districts of Sopore and Baramulla.

He carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh bounty on his head, said the police official.

The longest surviving militant, Najar joined militancy barely at an age of 16.

Lashkar-e-Islam carried out a series of attacks on cellphone towers in Sopore area in 2015. After his release, Najar recycled into the militancy in 1995. According to an intelligence officer, Qayoom changed his appearance by using wigs and impersonation to deceive the security agencies.

ANI later reported that the dead militant has been identified as Abdul Qayoom Najar.

Najar was a former Hizbul Mujahideen commander who was expelled by outfit's chief Syed Salahuddin for playing a key role in murdering innocent persons in the Valley.

"He belonged to Batapora in Sopore town". The terrorist's family confirmed that he had been killed in the encounter.

However, he broke away from Hizbul and formed Lashkar-e-Islam after a rebellion. "As they were challenged, militants opened fire triggering a gunfight".
