Tesla Inc (TSLA) Partners With AMD On Self-Driving Processor

The report stated that Tesla has received samples of the processor and is now running tests on it. Building a specific chip designed entirely for autonomous driving would help Tesla in a number of ways, including gaining more control over a key aspect of its own supply chain, and increasing overall system efficiency and performance. One notable exception is Junli Gu, who mainly worked on deep-learning software for four years at AMD before leaving to build "and lead the machine-learning team at Tesla Autopilot", according to her online bio.

Tesla upgrades self-driving sensors, hardware; full autonomy test next year?

AMD shares closed up 62 cents, or nearly 5%, at $13.74, following CNBC's headline, and are up another 87 cents, over 6%, at $14.62, in late trading.

Then, in May 2016, a dedicated Tesla owner was killed in a Florida crash when his Tesla Model S, operating on Autopilot, hit a tractor-trailer rig broadside and passed under it, shearing off the roof.

Tesla is said to be developing the AI chip processor on top of AMD technology, hoping to create a power-efficient multi-purpose chip to bring Tesla's vision of a fully autonomous driving vehicle into reality.

Tesla is known for its aspirations to vertically integrate its business as much as possible, and its partnership with AMD could be a move toward that goal.

Tesla is one of the leading automakers working towards a complete self-driving solution where it will one day be possible to hop in your auto, plug in a destination, and let the vehicle do all of the work. Jim Keller, formerly the chief architect for AMD's microprocessors, is now VP of autopilot hardware at Tesla.

Tesla, headed by United States magnate Elon Musk, has been working on self-driving cars for some years now.

Lipacis also comments on Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), which was bumped to the side in favor of AMD, saying that near-term headline risks aren't favorable but he doesn't see a long-term risk.
