Sensex, Nifty end flat in cautious trade ahead of Fed's outcome

Nifty hits record high in morning trade, Sensex surges 191 points

Mumbai, Sep 20 Key stock indices today settled near the base line, mainly due to passive foreign investors, as all eyes turned to US Federal Reserve's policy decision.

At the close, the 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex ended flat with a decline of 1.86 points or 0.01% at 32,400.51, 17 components registering drop. while the broad based NSE Nifty closed flat with a decline of 6.40 points or 0.06%, at 10,141.15.35 components registering drop.

On BSE, 1,100 stocks were advancing whereas 939 stocks were lagging and 105 stocks were appearing unchanged.

The Nifty50 closed at 10,147.55 points after touching a fresh high of 10,178.95 points during intra-day trade, while the Sensex closed at 32,402.37 points - down 21.39 points, or 0.07 per cent.

"There is a general fatigue in the market after a rally with some amount of consolidation".

In terms of the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index was lower by 0.07 per cent and the small-cap index by 0.14 per cent. "The consensus is showing status quo in interest rate while investors are keenly looking for any announcement for trimming the balance sheet", said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services Ltd.

Indian shares were little changed on Wednesday, while market heavyweight Reliance Industries Ltd hit a record high as a cut in mobile interconnect fee is seen benefiting the company's telecom unit.

On the 30 stock Sensex, Larsen and Toubro (2.20 percent), Bajaj Auto (1.86 percent) and Tata Motors (1.73 percent) were the top gainers. Tata Motors, Hindustan Unilever, BPCL and Hero MotoCorp were the major losers while Larsen & Toubro, ITC and Tata Steel were gaining apart from Reliance.
