Over 130 people killed in Mexico's 7.1-magnitude quake

The quake hit five miles from the Mexican state of Puebla, at a depth of 32 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey. Initial reports suggest almost half of the casualties were in Mexico City, according to Reuters. Official figures say 216 people have died, although some reports, including ABC, are claiming the death toll stands at as many as 248. Its epicentre was 4.5 km east-northeast of San Juan Raboso and 55 km south-southwest of the city of Puebla, in Puebla state.

A Mexican news station was broadcasting live the moment a magnitude 7.1 natural disaster hit the country Tuesday, close to the capital Mexico City.

The quake struck Mexico on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 tremblor that killed almost 5000 people.

September 19 - 20, 1985: Two earthquakes in western Mexico, one magnitude 8.0, kill at least 9,500 people in Mexico City and parts of central and western Mexico, heavily damaging parts of the capital.

At the school, TV pictures showed rescue teams working late into the night, using picks, shovels and their hands as well as heavy lifting gear in an attempt to find survivors.

President Enrique Peña Nieto visited the site earlier in the evening and was besieged by desperate parents, telling him that their children were missing. "We are with you and will be there for you", US President Donald Trump tweeted. The rescue work is still going on as police, firefighters and locals dug through the rubble of collapsed schools, homes and apartment buildings, looking for survivors of the quake.

Mexico City's global airport suspended operations and was checking facilities for any damage. "It was such a fright", a Pueblan resident was quoted as saying by local media.

The victims included students at a primary and secondary school in southern Mexico City.
