Intel Partners With Waymo on Latest Auto

Last year, Intel announced that it was partnering with BMW and Mobileye to collaborate on a self-driving vehicle called the iNEXT that would launch in 2021.

As a result of the collaboration, Waymo's self-driving Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans are now equipped with Intel's own technology used for sensor processing, general computing, and connectivity.

"Self-driving technology can help prevent these errors by giving autonomous vehicles the capacity to learn from the collective experience of millions of cars - avoiding the mistakes of others and creating a safer driving environment", says Krzanich.

Intel had recently announced the acquisition of Mobileye, an autonomous vision company for US$15 bn.

Intel has announced it is teaming up with with Alphabet's Waymo self-driving unit.

Intel's collaboration with Google came back in 2009, before Waymo was officially founded, when it began supplying Google with the necessary chips for autonomous systems, but their connections grew following Google's partnership with the auto giant, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Can Intel and Waymo's partnership create a fully autonomous vehicle?

Numerous existing self-driving cars on U.S. roads, including Waymo's, are now within or close to level 4 autonomy, making it one step away from being advanced enough to be fully autonomous.

Considering 90% of vehicular accidents are caused by human error, self driving cars are an important development, Krzanich said. However, it wasn't until Waymo started the Chrysler Pacifica minivan project that it began working more closely with the chipmaker. Second, Waymo is serious about its fully autonomous vehicle to the point that it is building its own proprietary computer technology that will include integrating Intel's processors into its own platform.

Using several of our early prototype minivans, we've already run a gamut of tests, including over 200 hours of extreme-weather testing, ' Krafcik said.

It marked the first time one of the project's cars had given a passenger a ride without a human on hand to take control of a self-driving vehicle if something went wrong.
