Georgia Tech student made freakish 911 call before being fatally shot

Atlanta Journal Constitution

In the call to police Saturday night, Scout Schultz described a suspicious person "as a white male, with long blond hair, white T-shirt & blue jeans who is possibly intoxicated, holding a knife and possibly armed with a gun on his hip", according to a statement from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"Shoot me!" shouted Schultz, who held a multipurpose tool featuring a blade while walking in the direction of the backpedaling officers. "Our goal is to work diligently to make positive change at Georgia Tech in an effort to ensure a safer campus for all students", they said.

Attendees at the vigil for Scout Schultz said that gathering ended quietly after less than half an hour, and about 20 minutes later a separate gathering developed with chanting, marching and, ultimately, confrontations at the campus police headquarters.

Two officers were injured Monday night, according to Georgia Tech.

Three people were arrested and charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer, the university later said in a statement. Shultz's mother, Lynn Schultz said.

In addition to serving as president of the Georgia Tech Pride Alliance, Schultz has been "a leader in the local community in terms of making Georgia Tech as well as the surrounding Atlanta community better for LGBTQIA individuals", Graham said. A search of their dorm room turned up three suicide notes.

But Lynne Schultz told The Post that her child's mental health issues appeared to have been resolved and that friends reported Scout seemed fine in their fourth year at Georgia Tech.

"Scout's family respects the rights of those who wish to voice opposition to what they feel was an unnecessary use of force, but they ask that it be done respectfully and safely", the statement added. "Police were not arresting everyone", an eyewitness said. Losing a student, friend, colleague, and campus leader is one of the most hard experiences that any of us will have to face.

Video shows officers repeatedly telling Schultz to drop the weapon as the student advances.

"We believe many of them were not part of our Georgia Tech community, but rather outside agitators intent on disrupting the event", Peterson said. And since January 2015, USA police have killed at least 392 people who were armed with knives, blades or other edged weapons - 102 deaths this year alone, including Schultz.

While the state's investigative bureau referred to Schultz as a male -- "Scott Schultz" - the student identified as intersex and used the pronoun "they".

"This is how we truly honour Scout's life and legacy".

In response to a request from The Associated Press, Georgia Tech on Monday refused to release the 911 call, or any personnel or disciplinary reports involving the officers, saying that such information is exempt from Georgia's open records law. After attempting suicide two years ago, Scout Schultz went through counseling and there was no indication anything was wrong when his father dropped him at school last month. After several more back-and-forths, Schultz takes three steps toward the officers and is shot.
