The country's Supreme Court, which has been hearing a high-profile corruption case against Nawaz Sharif and his children, ruled in July that Sharif had concealed overseas assets, and ordered his removal from office for "dishonesty". Election authorities will announce the final and official results later.
The constituencies from where PML-N won national assembly seats included NA-120, NA-68, NA-71, NA-83, NA-103, NA-129, NA-69, NA-137, NA-108, NA-19, NA-122, NA-153, NA-101, NA-267, NA-63 and NA-162.
Sharif was disqualified by Pakistan's top court for failure to declare a monthly salary, equivalent to around $2,700, from a company owned by his son.
According to the unofficial results, Kulsoom Nawaz secured 61,745 votes while her rival, Yasmeen Rashid of the opposition Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) or Justice Movement bagged 47099 votes, an election official said at a news conference Monday morning.
"Applaud the courage and determination with which Dr Yasmin Rashid fought NA-120 election against federal, provincial, and local governments-backed PML-N with their massive funds", he said as he congratulated Rashid for putting up a superb fight.
The constituency has 312,783 voters and the polling stations close at 5 p.m. Pakistan time. Fewer votes for the PML-N would allow political opponents to claim that even on the Sharif family's home turf the corruption allegations are having an effect.
Sunday's election, too, drew allegations of army interference, particularly from governing party supporters who said they had been stopped from voting by army guards and told that they were at the wrong polling station, even though their names appeared on that station's list.
The petitions were filed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominee for NA-120 Faisal Mir and Pakistan Awami Tehreek's (PAT) Advocate Ishtiaq Ahmad Chaudhry. Although she did not name anyone, PML-N sources said she was referring to alleged intimidation by parts of Pakistan's powerful military.
Gasoline prices slowly falling with bigger drops ahead
Gasoline prices will continue to fall even as oil holds steady due to better supply and demand balance after Harvey. During that time, in 2014, oil was the main driver of pump prices, as crude traded between $65 and $75 per barrel.
