Vermont unemployment now 3 percent; employers seek workers

AR unemployment climbs to 3.5 percent in August

The Labor Department said Friday that the unemployment rate rose in eight states, dropped in one, and was also mostly the same in 41 states.

New Hampshire has an unemployment rate of 2.7 percent while New York's stands at 4.8 percent.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says unemployment increased from 4.8% in July to 5% in August. The August numbers mark four full years where the state has been at or below the national unemployment rate.

Kansas saw an increase of 800 non-farm jobs in August. The Labor Department says the Norfolk area's labor force fell by nearly 400 people, which translated to 326 fewer people employed.

Compared to August 2016, nonfarm payroll jobs in Arkansas rose 22,500.

"From day one, a top priority of our administration has been growing our private sector and creating more jobs and we have made incredible progress", Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement.

Economist Emilie Doerksen said nonfarm employment grew by 800 jobs last month and the service-providing sector added almost 2,000 jobs.

The place of work data has shown a similar trend with total private sector employment down 5,700 since June and total nonfarm payrolls down 3,000. Six supersectors in the commonwealth added jobs over the year, with three adding more than 20,000. Those were offset by the loss of 4,600 professional and business services jobs and 1,300 in financial activities.
