Pres. Trump in Fla. to Meet With Victims of Hurricane Irma

US President Donald Trump talks to the media about Hurricane Irma next to First lady Melania Trump on the South Lawn of the White House upon their return to Washington US from Camp David

The president says he will be meeting with members of the coast guard, FEMA, and first responders.

The Trumps flew into Fort Myers on Thursday morning and then planned to head to Naples to survey the area, which was hard hit hard by the hurricane.

Trump had expressed worry about the path of Hurricane Irma last week, saying that the storm bearing toward Florida was "not good". The number of people without has dropped to 9.5 million - just under half of Florida's population.

"The president's action during these times demonstrate why he's a true leader who can bring the country together and get things done for the American people", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at Tuesday's press briefing after announcing Trump's planned travel.

The president said his administration is "trying to keep them as happy as we can under the circumstances. We love these people and we're going to be back!" he added.

"Historically there's never been anything like this, but the U.S. Coast Guard, FEMA, working with Gov. Scott, they've really done an wonderful job, power is turning on rapidly", said Mr. Trump.

"I can guarantee you this - it's going to cost billions, upon billions, upon billions of dollars", Curbelo said Monday. While he did not see any damage caused by Harvey, he met with storm victims that were forced into shelters during the storm.

They were joined by first lady Melania Trump at Naples Estates, a mobile home community for people 55 and older.

"First Responders are doing an incredible job and I want to thank everybody", Trump said.

On his second visit, to Texas and Louisiana, he was more hands-on. It remains to be seen how conservatives' loyalty to Trump will affect their response to a policy they would have opposed under other circumstances.

The president monitored Irma over this past weekend from Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.
