Summer Olympics Go Hollywood LA Gets 2028 Games

Paris and Los Angeles Confirmed As Hosts For 2024 and 2028 Olympics

Loud applause rang out at the Lima Convention Centre shortly after the International Olympic Committee membership voted to approve a deal hashed out in July which arranged for Paris to be given 2024 and Los Angeles 2028.

Under the terms of the 2028 host city contract, the IOC would immediately advance $180 million to the Los Angeles organizing committee due to the longer planning period and to fund youth sports in the years leading up to the Games.

The evaluation commission signed off on those Monday, saying that although details need to be finalized, it is confident LA can host in 2028.

The Los Angeles 2028 Games, with a budget of US$5.2b (NZ$7.3b), will essentially follow the plan they had in place for 2024, including housing athletes at the UCLA campus.

The vote, in addition to setting the Olympic schedule for 11 years, breaks the IOC's tradition of selecting host cities one at a time.

Paris last hosted the games in 1924.

The decision was influenced by the soaring cost of hosting the Olympics and the fact that fewer cities have seemed willing to assume the financial risk.

The Associated Press reports that Bach declared the vote unanimous after a "show of hands" count raised no objections.

“Its a big win and we are here to really enjoy it, ” said Paris 2024 bid co-chief Tony Estanguet, reflecting the triumphant mood among the 60-strong French delegation in the Peruvian capital.

"These are two great cities from two great countries with a great Olympic history". Bach is in Lima for the Wednesday IOC session to vote on the host cities for the next Olympics.

Both the 2014 winter Games in Russia's Sochi and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics were mired in controversy over corruption, embezzlement and doping allegations, dealing a major blow to the reputations of the event and the IOC.

It is the first time the International Olympic Committee has awarded a Games 11 years in advance. The Proskauer team helped assemble L.A.'s bid book, develop the vision, concept and budget for the Games, secure venue agreements and negotiate with the USOC, form the bid committee and obtain its status as a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

Los Angeles moved to 2028, and will halt a stretch of 32 years without a Summer Games in the United States.

"I want to thank the people of my city, the Angelenos who have believed in the Olympics for over a century", Garcetti said then. "For the first time in a generation, we are bringing the Games back to the City of Angels".
