'Active Shooter Alert' Issued at New Hampshire Medical Center

Shooting at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Centre

Police are investigating a report of an active shooter situation at a New Hampshire hospital.

The university urged people to avoid the area until further notice.

Hospital employees received an alert warning them of an active shooter in the level 4 south intensive care unit and told them to shelter in place, the Valley News of Lebanon reports.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's office as well as New Hampshire State Police, Lebanon police, Vermont State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene to search for the shooter. The hospital was under lockdown and it wasn't clear if that was lifted. There is now no confirmation that any shots were fired during the incident, though employees were told to either evacuate or shelter in place.

Police in the town of Lebanon confirmed that one suspect was arrested shortly before 3 p.m., 90 minutes after the initial alert.

Hospital spokesman Mike Barwell says that Dartmouth-Hitchcock is "currently locked down" and that local and state police are on site.

Several witnesses driving along Interstate I-89 reported seeing heavy State Police presence at all exits.
