Stam encourages Eagles to show patience for De Boer

Joint 15. Sam Allardyce lasted 151 days in charge

"That we are still with no points - nobody expected that", he admits. I am very disappointed about the result, but not about how we played.

"I'd like to think [he's earned the chance]. Everybody was pleased about the performance - we could have drawn".

Frank de Boer: "I have a positive feeling from what I have seen in training this week".

The Ivory Coast global is widely considered to be the south London outfit's best player and De Boer will be hoping it is not too long before he can return to action. If you concede a goal, like the sloppy one we conceded today, we have nothing.

Only some poor finishing - notably from striker Christian Benteke and defender Scott Dann, who headed wide from point-blank range in the final minute - prevented them taking at least a point from the game, although the result means they have still not scored in the league this season. I am convinced they understand what they have to do.

Last season, the Clarets completed a double on their opponents, and they won the corresponding fixture 3-2. De Boer's brief was to bring his own brand of football - the Ajax way - to the club in the hope that it might provide more Premier League stability.

It was clear from watching him during the 3-0 home defeat by Huddersfield Town on the opening day of the season that he is not a style fundamentalist either. But teaching the players to adopt a different way of playing - in a different team shape - has been challenging. De Boer's switch seemed rooted in more reluctance - he said before the match he wanted to take his players back to their "comfort zone".

"We still are at seven or eight games".

With a World Cup on the horizon, the dream of starting England's first group game in Russian Federation next June will surely be a thought within Heaton's mind each time he takes to the pitch this season.

Without that, Palace were always in the hunt and the visitors dominated possession at the start of the second half as they looked to kick-start their season.

It is worth remembering that Steve Parish, the chairman now mulling over replacing the manager, said in June that one of the reasons why De Boer was hired was that he convinced the board he could tailor his methods to his new surrounds.

"We discussed it and everybody agreed", he says.

"I thought they were the better side".

The defeat has replicated the Eagles' worst start to a league campaign in 92 years and therefore puts his side one more straight defeat away from a very unwanted record.

"The amount of effort he had made to look at the club, look at the staff, how we play - all of those things were unbelievably impressive when I sat down with him", he said.

Time was a luxury he didn't have last season at Inter Milan. He believes that, this time, he will be given the time to see the job through.

De Boer's men kept the Clarets pinned back but couldn't find a way through to seriously test Pope as his team-mates defended with great discipline to protect their lead. I won't go scoring a worldy every week but I work hard and most of my play is inside the box and making sure I am in the right positions and ready for the opportunities.
