Hurricane Katia Is Now Category 2, Heading to Mexico

Hurricane Irma: Everything You Need to Know About This Monster Storm

Katia was a smaller hurricane in comparison to more unsafe Irma and Jose.

The country has been dealing with the arrival of the Gulf coast hurricane while parts of it are already in ruins following a magnitude 8.1 natural disaster.

As of 11 p.m. EDT, the NHC recorded that Hurricane Katia has a maximum sustained wind of 85 miles per hour and moving towards a western path at 3 miles per hour.

The storm has deluged the mountainous region in Veracruz, which has a history of deadly floods and mudslides.

Katia is still expected to cause chaos and leave 250 millimeters of rain in Veracruz and Puebla, as well as torrential storms in San Luis Potosí and Hidalgo and intense storm conditions in Tlaxcala, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Tabasco.

Tropical Storm Katia has maximum sustained winds at 45 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Katia has been downgraded from a tropical storm to a tropical depression as it moves into the interior of Mexico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center, NHC, has announced.

The storm is expected to make landfall in Mexico's southeast coast late Friday or early Saturday.

One of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in Mexico and a raging hurricane dealt a devastating one-two punch to the country, killing at least 61 people as workers scrambled to respond to the twin national emergencies.

As Katia rapidly weakened, Hurricane Jose continued to gather strength far out in the Atlantic.

Many people remained in the streets, fearing aftershocks.

Mexican soldiers who form part of the national disaster program patrol the coastway along the beach in Barra de Cazones, in Veracruz state, on September 7, 2017.
