Hurricane Katia, third to form in Atlantic

Tropical Storm Jose Becomes the 10th Named Storm of the Hurricane Season

Hurricane Jose continues to strengthen, moving west-northwest at around 17 miles per hour.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Katia's maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour with some strengthening forecast over the next two days.

Earlier in the day, Katia was slightly nearer to the Mexican coast, and at about 10 p.m. CDT (0300 GMT) was moving east-southeast at around 2 miles per hour (4 kph), the center said.

A hurricane watch is in effect from Cabo Rojo to Laguna Verde, the National Hurricane Center said.

Jose was upgraded to a hurricane in the Atlantic, far east of Hurricane Irma which is now on its way to Florida.

Yet another tropical storm, Katia, is located off the coast of Mexico and is projected to become a hurricane as well. This system formed in the western Gulf of Mexico from a lingering disturbance earlier this week.

Now Jose could approach those islands on Saturday.

Earlier: Emergency attempts to reach Caribbean island communities devastated by Hurricane Irma could be affected by a second major storm threatening the region.

The Atlantic basin has three active hurricanes for the first time in seven years. Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful storms on record, is already barreling towards Florida where it could strike as a Category 4 or 5 storm.

Irma will likely make landfall in Florida or somewhere in the southeast United States by the end of the weekend after carving a path through the Caribbean this week.

So while Houston will be spared from another storm, eastern Mexico is at risk of localised flooding and potential mudslides. Prime Minister Gaston Browne said it's possible a mandatory evacuation may be ordered by Friday.
