MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept Looks Enticing in First Clip

Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept Wings Its Way Into Frankfurt

Mini is showing off its own version of a street/track auto and it is a very good looking vehicle called the Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept. Like the brand's Electric Mini Concept, which is also due to make an appearance at Frankfurt, the GP is based on the same basic body shell as on the current third generation auto.

Commenting on the uncompromising look of the new auto, BMW Group senior vice president of design, Adrian von Hooydonk, said: "If you know about Mini, you'll be aware of the brand's long and successful history in motor sport". "This is driving fun in its purest form". "The MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept brings together the full suite of defining MINI design features and showcases them at their sportiest and most exciting".

Signature oval headlights and hexagonal grille are surrounded by a host of performance-oriented modifications, including a hood scoop, side vents that wrap around all four fenders, a not-so-mini front splitter with a mesh screen to match the grille and, of course, a prominent rear spoiler, all of which is meant to make the auto more aerodynamic, or at least appear that way. There are a few trademark Mini toggle switches and a large (and slightly worrying) emergency cut-off button to provide some analogue relief.

While entry-level MINI Clubman Cooper also picks up new sports seats trimmed in combination leather and cloth. Other track-inspired elements include a simple dashboard with heads-up display, and touch-control adjustment of suspension settings. Much use is made of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre, with careful management of weight distribution held as key to delivering "MINI's signature go-kart feeling". Nothing is official just yet, though insiders suggest the N48 designated unit could receive the same state of tune as it does in the BMW 330i, which offers 185kW and 350Nm of torque.

There's no information on the powertrain, but based on what we've seen with previous GP models, don't expect a production version to pack a lot of power. In honor of the latest John Cooper Works GP in 2012 and Cooper S with JCW GP in 2006 (both 218 hp), this study adopts a dynamic style.

I'd love to say this signals that Mini's going to start making plenty of hardcore, track-ready enthusiast cars, but it doesn't.
